IELTS Vocabulary FAQ

How many words do I need to know for IELTS Band 7+?

For Band 7+, you should have an active vocabulary of around 7,000-8,000 words. However, more important than quantity is depth: Can you use synonyms, form collocations, and use words in the right context? Our 511+ core vocabulary covers the most important academic and general terms.

Should I learn British or American English for IELTS?

IELTS accepts both variants – consistency is what matters! If you write "colour", stay with British English. Most examiners know both spellings. Tip: Choose the variant you've had more exposure to (e.g., through movies or books).

How can I learn vocabulary effectively for IELTS?

The most effective method is context-based learning: learn words in sentences and collocations, not in isolation. Use spaced repetition (review at increasing intervals) and group vocabulary by IELTS topics like environment, technology, or education. Write 2-3 sentences every day with new words.

Which vocabulary categories are most important for IELTS?

The most common IELTS topics are: Education & Learning, Environment & Sustainability, Technology & Innovation, Health & Lifestyle, and Society & Culture. Academic verbs (analyze, evaluate, demonstrate) and linking words (furthermore, nevertheless, consequently) are particularly important for Writing and Speaking.

Is learning vocabulary enough to get a good IELTS score?

No! Vocabulary is just one of the four scoring criteria for Speaking and Writing (Lexical Resource). You also need grammatical range, coherence, and task achievement. However, a rich vocabulary helps enormously: it enables more precise expressions and avoids repetition.
