IELTS Listening: Concentration Is Everything
30 minutes listening + 10 minutes transfer – and each audio is played only once! Learn how to score all 40 points.
The IELTS Listening section consists of 4 sections and 40 questions answered during 30 minutes of audio, followed by 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet. Each recording is played only once, making sustained concentration essential. The sections progress in difficulty: Sections 1 and 2 cover everyday and general contexts, while Sections 3 and 4 move into academic discussions and lectures. Question types include form and table completion, multiple choice, matching, map and diagram labelling, and sentence completion.
Important: You only hear it once!
Unlike many language exams, you hear each IELTS audio only ONCE. Full concentration is crucial. Read the questions BEFORE listening and mark keywords. You cannot rewind!

Frequently Asked Questions
How many times do I hear the recording?
Only ONCE! Unlike some other exams, each IELTS Listening section is played only once. That's why concentration is crucial. You get 10 minutes at the end to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
What are the most common traps?
The most common traps are: 1) Changes – someone says a number, then corrects themselves. 2) Distractors – wrong information is given before the correct answer. 3) Paraphrasing – the question uses different words than the recording. Always listen until the end!
What accents are used?
IELTS uses various English accents: British, American, Australian, New Zealand, and sometimes light international accents. Practice with different accents – BBC, CNN, Australian podcasts help!
What if I miss an answer?
Move on! If you try to reconstruct a missed answer, you'll miss the next questions. Just guess at the end. Mark the question and focus on what's coming.
