What is IELTS General Training?

IELTS General Training is the version of IELTS designed for immigration, work visas, and vocational training rather than university admission. It tests everyday English used in social and workplace contexts.

Who needs IELTS General Training?

Applicants for permanent residency or work visas in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK; candidates for secondary or vocational education; and applicants to certain professional bodies that use IELTS General.

What score do I need for Canadian PR?

Canadian Express Entry uses CLB levels. CLB 9 (IELTS 6.0 Listening, 7.0 Reading/Writing/Speaking) gives maximum language points. Higher scores give no additional CLB points but still matter for tie-breakers.

How is IELTS General Training structured?

Four modules: Listening (30 min + 10 min transfer), Reading (60 min — everyday texts), Writing (60 min — Task 1: letter, Task 2: essay), Speaking (11–14 min).

How is IELTS General Training scored?

Same 0–9 band system as IELTS Academic. Each section is scored independently, and the overall band is the rounded average. General Training often has a slightly more lenient Reading scale than Academic.

How long is an IELTS General score valid?

2 years from the test date. Immigration authorities may require the certificate to be more recent at the time of application — check your target country’s rules.

How does IELTS General differ from Academic?

Listening and Speaking are identical. General Reading uses notices, advertisements, workplace guides; Academic uses research articles. General Writing Task 1 is a letter; Academic Task 1 is chart description.

Should I take Academic or General Training for UK Visa?

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) offers both IELTS Life Skills and IELTS for UKVI Academic/General. For skilled worker visas, General Training for UKVI is usually correct. For student visas, Academic for UKVI.
