Should I take IELTS Academic or General for Canada PR?
IELTS General Training is accepted for Canada PR immigration purposes. IELTS Academic is only required if you plan to pursue higher education in Canada or apply for certain professional licenses that specifically require it.
How long is the IELTS score valid for Canada PR?
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years (24 months) from the test date. Your score must be valid both when you receive your ITA (Invitation to Apply) and when you submit your PR application.
What is the difference between CLB and IELTS?
CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is Canada's official language proficiency standard. IELTS scores are converted to CLB levels skill by skill, and the thresholds differ per skill. For example, 6.0 in every skill = CLB 7, but CLB 9 needs 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking and 8.0 in Listening.
How many CRS points can I get from IELTS?
A single applicant can earn up to 136 CRS points from language proficiency. CLB 10 (IELTS 8.5+) gives maximum points. With a spouse or common-law partner, your own language points are capped at 128, plus up to 20 for your partner's language. Language is one of the highest-scoring factors in Express Entry.
Is PTE accepted for Canada PR instead of IELTS?
Yes, since early 2024 (accepted for Express Entry from 30 January 2024), PTE Core is accepted for Canada immigration. However, IELTS remains the most widely recognized and preferred test by immigration consultants and lawyers.
Can I combine two IELTS test scores?
No, you cannot combine scores from different test sessions. All four component scores must come from a single test sitting within the 2-year validity period.
What if my IELTS score expires during processing?
Your IELTS score must be valid when you receive your ITA and submit your application. If it expires during processing after submission, you generally don't need to retake the test, but check the latest IRCC guidelines.
Can I use IELTS One Skill Retake for Canada PR?
No. IRCC states that it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Your profile needs a full IELTS General Training result, with all four scores from the same test. One Skill Retake may still help for other purposes that accept it, such as some universities, but not for Canada PR.
