Frequently asked questions about Goethe-Zertifikat B1

What is Goethe-Zertifikat B1?

Goethe-Zertifikat B1 certifies independent German language use at CEFR level B1. You can deal with most everyday situations, describe experiences, and produce simple connected text on familiar topics.

Is B1 required for German citizenship?

Yes. B1 is the minimum German level for German naturalization. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is accepted as proof alongside other recognized certificates like telc B1 or ÖSD B1.

How long does it take to reach B1?

Typically 350–500 total hours of instruction from zero. Learners already at A2 usually need 200–250 additional hours to reach B1, depending on study intensity and prior exposure.

What is the structure of the B1 exam?

Four modules: Reading (65 min), Listening (40 min), Writing (60 min), Speaking (15 min, paired). Each module can be taken and passed independently; you only retake the one you fail.

What score is needed to pass B1?

You need 60 out of 100 on each module. Modules are independent — a pass on three does not require retaking those when you retake the fourth.

Can I retake only one B1 module if I fail it?

Yes. Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is the only Goethe exam with full modular retake. If you pass three of the four modules, you keep those results and only retake the failed module.

How much does the B1 exam cost?

Full exam is typically €130–€200 depending on country. Single-module retakes are cheaper, usually €40–€60 per module. Check local Goethe-Institut pricing.

How long is the B1 certificate valid for citizenship applications?

The certificate itself has no expiration. However, for citizenship applications, some authorities ask for a certificate issued within the last 2–5 years. Always verify current requirements with your local authority.
