IELTS for UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) 2026 Guide

IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is the same test as regular IELTS in terms of content, format, and difficulty. The key difference is administrative: UKVI tests are taken at specially approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) centres with enhanced security measures including video recording and biometric checks. The UK Home Office only accepts IELTS taken at these approved centres for visa applications. Regular IELTS is not accepted for UK immigration purposes.

For a UK Student visa it depends on the course level. Below degree level you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at CEFR B1 — for IELTS, that is IELTS for UKVI. For degree level and above the level is B2, and your university may assess your English itself and accept a standard IELTS Academic; your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) shows how your English was assessed. Most universities require an overall band score of 5.5 to 7.0, with minimum scores in each component. Russell Group universities typically require 6.5-7.0 overall with no component below 6.0. Foundation courses may accept 5.5 overall. Always check your specific university and course requirements, as they vary significantly.

At British Council centres in the UK, IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training, on computer) costs GBP 257 and IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2 or B1) costs GBP 182 (2026 centre prices). Prices vary by test centre and country, so check the exact fee when you book. The higher cost reflects the additional security measures and administrative requirements mandated by the UK Home Office.

IELTS for UKVI can only be taken at test centres approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). These are called SELT (Secure English Language Testing) centres. You can find approved centres through the official IELTS website or the UK government website (gov.uk). There are over 100 approved centres worldwide, but not every regular IELTS centre is UKVI-approved, so always verify before booking.

IELTS UKVI results are valid for 2 years (24 months) from the test date. Your score must be valid at the time you submit your visa application. If your results expire during processing after submission, this is generally acceptable, but always check the latest UK Home Office guidance. Plan your test date carefully to ensure validity throughout the application process.

Not where the Home Office asks for a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — work visas such as Skilled Worker, family visas and settlement. There, only IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills counts, taken at an approved centre. The exception is a Student visa at degree level or above: your university may assess your English itself and accept a regular IELTS, and your CAS states how it was assessed. Below degree level a SELT is required.

IELTS Life Skills is a simplified test that only assesses Speaking and Listening skills (no Reading or Writing). It is available at two CEFR levels: A1 and B1. Life Skills A1 is required for spouse, partner, and family visas. Life Skills B1 is required for settlement (ILR - Indefinite Leave to Remain) and citizenship applications. The test is graded as pass or fail with no band score.

For paper-based IELTS UKVI, results are available within 13 calendar days of the test. For computer-delivered IELTS UKVI, results are typically available 1–5 days after the test. Your Test Report Form (TRF) is posted within 13 calendar days. You can view results online and use them for your visa application. Some test centres also offer a priority results service for an additional fee.
