What is IELTS UKVI?

IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is a version of the IELTS test specifically designated by the UK Home Office for visa and immigration applications. It was established as part of the UK government's Secure English Language Testing (SELT) framework to ensure that all English language tests used for immigration purposes meet strict security and administrative standards.

The test content, format, difficulty, and scoring are identical to regular IELTS. The difference lies entirely in the administrative and security procedures: UKVI tests are conducted at specially approved SELT centres with enhanced identity verification, video surveillance throughout the test, and strict chain-of-custody for test materials. This ensures the integrity of results used for immigration decisions.

Two Types of IELTS for UK Immigration:

IELTS for UKVI (Academic / General Training)

  • Full 4-skill test: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
  • Band scores 1-9 for each component
  • For work visas, student visas, and skilled migration

IELTS Life Skills (A1 / B1)

  • Speaking and Listening only (no Reading or Writing)
  • Pass or Fail result (no band score)
  • For spouse/partner visas and UK settlement (ILR)

IELTS UKVI vs Regular IELTS: Key Differences

Many test takers wonder what separates IELTS UKVI from the standard IELTS exam. While the actual test is identical in content and scoring, the administrative differences are critical for UK visa applications. Taking regular IELTS instead of UKVI is a common and costly mistake that leads to visa rejection.

How to Book IELTS UKVI: Step-by-Step

1

Determine Your Visa Type

Identify which UK visa you need and check the specific English language requirement (IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills).

2

Find an Approved SELT Centre

Search the IELTS website or gov.uk for UKVI-approved test centres near you. Not all IELTS centres are SELT-approved.

3

4

Pay the Test Fee

IELTS for UKVI costs GBP 195-228 depending on your location. Payment is typically required at the time of booking.

5

Prepare Your Documents

Bring a valid passport (the same one you will use for your visa application) on test day. No other ID is accepted for UKVI.

6

Take the Test

Arrive early on test day. The test takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Video recording is standard at SELT centres.

7

Receive Your Results

Results available in 3-5 days (computer) or 13 days (paper). Your TRF will be posted and available online for visa applications.

IELTS Life Skills Explained

IELTS Life Skills is designed for applicants who only need to prove their Speaking and Listening ability at CEFR level A1 or B1. Unlike the full IELTS test, Life Skills does not include a Reading or Writing component, and results are given as a simple pass or fail.

Life Skills A1

  • For: Spouse, partner, and family visas (joining family in the UK)
  • Skills tested: Speaking and Listening only
  • Duration: Approximately 16-18 minutes
  • Result: Pass or Fail (no band score)
  • Level: Basic everyday communication

Life Skills B1

  • For: Settlement (ILR) and UK citizenship applications
  • Skills tested: Speaking and Listening only
  • Duration: Approximately 22 minutes
  • Result: Pass or Fail (no band score)
  • Level: Intermediate everyday communication

Note: IELTS Life Skills costs approximately GBP 150 and must also be taken at an approved SELT centre. Results are typically available within 7 business days. Life Skills cannot be used for student or work visas, which require the full IELTS for UKVI test.

Preparation Tips by Visa Type

Different UK visas have different language requirements. Tailor your preparation to the specific visa you are applying for to study efficiently and avoid over-preparing or under-preparing.

Skilled Worker Visa

  • Focus on all four skills equally since you need 4.0 in each component
  • Practice with workplace-related topics for Speaking and Writing
  • IELTS General Training is usually sufficient and slightly easier than Academic
  • The 4.0 minimum is achievable with consistent practice over 4-8 weeks

Student Visa

  • Take IELTS Academic for UKVI, not General Training
  • Aim higher than the minimum since many universities require 6.5-7.0
  • Focus heavily on academic writing (Task 2 essays and graph descriptions)
  • Practice reading academic journals and research papers
  • No component should fall below 5.5 for most degree-level courses

Spouse / Family Visa

  • Take IELTS Life Skills A1 (only Speaking and Listening)
  • Practice everyday conversation topics: family, shopping, directions
  • The test is pass/fail with no band score, which reduces pressure
  • Focus on understanding and responding to simple questions
  • Test duration is about 16-18 minutes for A1

Settlement (ILR)

  • Take IELTS Life Skills B1 or full IELTS for UKVI with 4.0+ each
  • Life Skills B1 tests Speaking and Listening at intermediate level
  • Practice discussing current events and expressing opinions
  • The B1 test lasts about 22 minutes
  • Also prepare for the Life in the UK test (separate requirement)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IELTS and IELTS UKVI?

IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is the same test as regular IELTS in terms of content, format, and difficulty. The key difference is administrative: UKVI tests are taken at specially approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) centres with enhanced security measures including video recording and biometric checks. The UK Home Office only accepts IELTS taken at these approved centres for visa applications. Regular IELTS is not accepted for UK immigration purposes.

Which IELTS do I need for a UK student visa?

For a UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4), you need IELTS Academic for UKVI. Most universities require an overall band score of 5.5 to 7.0, with minimum scores in each component. Russell Group universities typically require 6.5-7.0 overall with no component below 6.0. Foundation courses may accept 5.5 overall. Always check your specific university and course requirements, as they vary significantly.

How much does IELTS UKVI cost?

IELTS for UKVI costs approximately GBP 195-228, which is slightly more expensive than regular IELTS (approximately GBP 180). IELTS Life Skills costs around GBP 150. Prices vary by test centre and country. The higher cost reflects the additional security measures and administrative requirements mandated by the UK Home Office.

Where can I take IELTS UKVI?

IELTS for UKVI can only be taken at test centres approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). These are called SELT (Secure English Language Testing) centres. You can find approved centres through the official IELTS website or the UK government website (gov.uk). There are over 100 approved centres worldwide, but not every regular IELTS centre is UKVI-approved, so always verify before booking.

How long are UKVI results valid?

IELTS UKVI results are valid for 2 years (24 months) from the test date. Your score must be valid at the time you submit your visa application. If your results expire during processing after submission, this is generally acceptable, but always check the latest UK Home Office guidance. Plan your test date carefully to ensure validity throughout the application process.

Can I use regular IELTS for a UK visa?

No, regular IELTS is not accepted for UK visa applications. The UK Home Office requires IELTS taken at an approved SELT centre (IELTS for UKVI). This applies to all visa categories including student visas, work visas, spouse visas, and settlement applications. The only exception is if a university holds Tier 4 sponsor status and independently accepts regular IELTS as proof of English for CAS issuance, but the Home Office still requires UKVI for the visa itself.

What is IELTS Life Skills?

IELTS Life Skills is a simplified test that only assesses Speaking and Listening skills (no Reading or Writing). It is available at two CEFR levels: A1 and B1. Life Skills A1 is required for spouse, partner, and family visas. Life Skills B1 is required for settlement (ILR - Indefinite Leave to Remain) and citizenship applications. The test is graded as pass or fail with no band score.

How long does it take to get UKVI results?

For paper-based IELTS UKVI, results are available within 13 calendar days of the test. For computer-delivered IELTS UKVI, results are typically available within 3-5 business days. Your Test Report Form (TRF) is posted within 13 calendar days. You can view results online and use them for your visa application. Some test centres also offer a priority results service for an additional fee.
