IELTS Academic is the version of the International English Language Testing System designed for university admissions and professional registration. It tests English proficiency across Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Most universities require an overall band of 6.0–7.0, with 5.5–6.5 minimums per section. Top-ranked programs often require 7.0–7.5 overall. Always check the exact requirement of the university and program.
Four modules taken on the same day: Listening (30 min + 10 min transfer), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min — Task 1: data description, Task 2: essay), Speaking (11–14 min, face-to-face or video).
Each section receives a band score from 0 to 9 in 0.5 increments. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest 0.5. All band scores are shown on the Test Report Form.
IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, most institutions will ask for a fresh certificate. Always verify with the accepting organization.
Both formats are identical in content and scoring. Computer-delivered tests typically return results in 3–5 days vs 13 days for paper. Writing on a computer suits some candidates better; others prefer handwriting.
Listening and Speaking are identical. Academic Reading uses journal-style passages; General Reading uses everyday texts. Academic Writing Task 1 describes a chart or graph; General Task 1 is a letter.
Yes — IELTS One Skill Retake is available at most test centers. You can retake any single module within 60 days of the original test. Only available for computer-delivered tests.
