Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1990 from former East German districts and contains the heartland of the German Reformation: Wittenberg, where Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the Schlosskirche door in 1517. The state has four UNESCO World Heritage sites — more than any other Bundesland — including the Bauhaus sites in Dessau, the Luther memorials in Wittenberg and Eisleben, the Quedlinburg old town, and the Naumburg Cathedral.
