What is the Leben in Deutschland test?

The Leben in Deutschland (Life in Germany) test, also called the Einbürgerungstest (citizenship test), is the official knowledge exam administered by the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees). It checks knowledge of German democracy, history, geography, and society. The real test consists of 33 multiple-choice questions: 30 general questions and 3 questions specific to the Bundesland where you take it. You have 60 minutes and need at least 17 correct answers to pass.

Many take this test alongside Goethe B1 — the language requirement for German citizenship. Practice Goethe B1 here: Goethe-Zertifikat B1.

The Einbürgerungstest (also known as the Leben in Deutschland test) is the official German civic-knowledge exam that anyone applying for German citizenship through naturalisation must pass. Here's a complete overview.

Test format

33 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, 17 of 33 to pass. 30 questions are general (Germany-wide), and 3 are specific to the Bundesland where you take the test.

Question pool

All questions come from the official BAMF catalog of 460 questions: 300 general + 16 × 10 state-specific. The catalog is published openly, so you can prepare 100% with the real questions.

Cost & eligibility

The official Einbürgerungstest costs €25 in 2026, taken at a BAMF-approved test centre. Children under 16 and people with certain disabilities are exempt. Practising here is free, unlimited, and ad-free.

How it differs from Leben in Deutschland

The Einbürgerungstest and the Leben in Deutschland test are essentially the same exam — same 460-question catalog, same format. „Leben in Deutschland" is administered through BAMF integration courses; „Einbürgerungstest" is taken when applying for citizenship. Format and questions are identical.

How to prepare for the Einbürgerungstest

  1. 1Read the official BAMF question catalog (300 general + 10 state-specific). Available on the BAMF website.
  2. 2Take a full 33-question mock test on this page to assess your starting level.
  3. 3Identify the categories you scored worst on (history, politics, geography, society) and re-read those questions in the catalog.
  4. 4Take 3-5 more mock tests over a week. Vary your selected Bundesland if you haven't decided where you'll sit the real exam.
  5. 5When you consistently score 25+/33, book the real exam at a BAMF test centre.

All questions are taken directly from the official BAMF question catalog (Stand 07.05.2025). Same wording, same options as the real test.
